In her 25th season as a marketing and event planner with the Giants, Valerie McGuire has been coordinating Saturday’s World Series ring ceremony.Did you ever think you would have to plan this particular event? I was hoping. That was always the goal. I don’t think I ever really thought about the ring ceremony until we got to this point and then it became a really big deal. I just hope it won’t be the one and only.

The 49ers may wrap up their decade-old tiff with The City over poor conditions at the run-down Candlestick Park with a settlement proposed by former Mayor Gavin Newsom just before he left office.
The agreement could satisfy both team officials — because it allows them to leave Candlestick earlier than under the current lease agreement — and The City — because it would prevent the 49ers from pursuing a $60 million claim for repairs.

A $60,000 film session inside Candlestick Park on Wednesday might save the planet from a perilous viral outbreak. The producers of the movie “Contagion” — a star-studded action thriller about an international pandemic — are paying The City $60,000 to reserve the stadium that is home to the San Francisco 49ers. An agreement that would keep the San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick Park for another four seasons was approved by the Recreation and Park Commission on Thursday evening.
The agreement first announced in December would amend the lease the team to allow the team to stay through 2015, according to Rec and Park officials. It also provides rent credits on deferred maintenance and safety at the stadium.

Desperate times require desperate solutions. Gene Washington once pointed out to me that Joe Thomas was so destructive in the late ’70s that Eddie DeBartolo was forced to turn control over to Bill Walsh.

Alex Smith justified Mike Singletary’s decision to start him and made a strong case to stay in San Francisco as the 49ers trounccd the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
Singletary’s decision was roundly criticized by the know-nothings in the Bay Area media. One pointed to Troy Smith’s winning record as a starter, without noting that the wins came over the 3-10 Broncos, 4-9 Cardinals and 6-7 Rams. Whoop-dee-doo.

The coach still is the coach, and why not? It wouldn’t do any good to get rid of Mike Singletary at this point. He has a sense of purpose, and at times a sense of humor. You go after him, and he’s right back at you, admirable even if his record is not.
He keeps us guessing. That’s the essence of the football mind, which distills everything to “us vs. them.” A change of quarterbacks? Plays designed specifically for Brian Westbrook?

It had to be painful for 49ers fans on Sunday, thinking of the two that got away.
The least obvious is offensive coordinator Mike Martz. I supported Mike Singletary’s elevation to head coach, though he knew nothing about offensive football, because Martz was there. But the first move Singletary made was to fire Martz.

Somebody had to win, and it was the 49ers who beat the Raiders on Sunday in one of the 10 worst games I’ve watched in the 44 seasons I’ve been covering pro football.
Truthfully, there wasn’t much for the 49ers to be proud of, except for finally getting that first elusive victory.
