Momentum is building among state and federal officials to dissolve the California High-Speed Rail Authority and roll it into a proposed state transportation agency.
Last week, Gov. Jerry Brown suggested folding the authority — along with Caltrans, the California Highway Patrol and the Department of Motor Vehicles — into a new department. He said consolidation of the agencies, an idea in his 2012-13 budget proposal, would save the state money. Read More

A motorcyclist who crashed this morning on the westbound Interstate Highway 80 ramp that connects to southbound U.S. Highway 101 in San Francisco has died, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The motorcyclist was taken to the hospital after the accident was reported at 12:33 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the hospital this morning, CHP officials reported after 2 a.m.

The suspect in what appears to be a shooting by a disgruntled security guard at a Richmond apartment complex on Wednesday night is in custody in El Dorado County, authorities said.The security officer, 50-year-old Concord resident Doran Long Jr., is suspected of shooting at his supervisor around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 500 block of Hartnett Avenue.The supervisor was hit by the gunfire but is expected to survive.
