BERKELEY — Justin Cobbs is regaining confidence in his jump shot and it earned him Pac-12 Player of the Week honors this week.
With the help of Cobbs’ buzzer beater on Thursday and his 18 points on Saturday, the Cal men’s basketball team knocked off Oregon and Oregon State on the road last week to move within striking distance of a Pac-12 conference title.

Cal’s junior point guard hit a jumper in the final second as the Bears made it 11 straight wins over Oregon and moved within one game of the 23rd-ranked Ducks in the Pac-12 Conference standings with a 48-46 road win on Thursday night.

TEMPE, Ariz. — Evan Gordon scored 23 points, while Ruslan Pateev had 12 points and eight rebounds as the Arizona State men’s basketball team held on to beat Cal 66-62 on Thursday.
The Sun Devils (18-5, 7-3 Pac-12 Conference) went up 16 points after a 17-3 run in the first half and kept the lead around double digits until the Bears (13-9, 5-5) tightened up defensively in the closing minutes.

BERKELEY — If defense wins games, it shouldn’t be surprising that the Cal men’s basketball team picked up its first win against a top-10 opponent in more than five years last week.
The Bears (13-8, 5-4 Pac-12 Conference) grabbed a much-needed signature win against Oregon (then No. 10) on Saturday by forcing 22 turnovers, allowing only three second-chance points and limiting the Ducks to 2-of-12 shooting from beyond the arc.

Two teams seemingly headed in different directions meet when UCLA and Cal open Pac-12 Confernce play against one another today.
After starting the season 6-0, Cal has lost four of its last six games. The Bears are coming off a demoralizing 67-62 loss to Harvard on Saturday, and have been bit by the injury bug in recent weeks.

Cal men’s basketball coach Mike Montgomery agreed to a two-year contract extension Monday that will keep him at the school at least through the 2015-16 season.
Montgomery led Cal to a 24-10 overall record and a second-place finish in the Pac-12 Conference with a 13-5 mark.
The Bears reached the NCAA Tournament, but were knocked out in a play-in game by South Florida.
