Andy Buh reportedly hired as Cal football's defensive coordinator

Wisconsin linebackers coach Andy Buh has accepted an offer to become the defensive coordinator at Cal under new Golden Bears coach Sonny Dykes, the Wisconsin State Journal reported Sunday. Buh, 35, had been an assistant coach at Cal’s rival Stanford for three years from 2007 through 2009, and he was the Cardinal’s co-defensive coordinator his final two seasons on Jim Harbaugh’s staff. Cal men’s basketball fans will get a chance to watch two of the nation’s most prolific scorers go head-to-head when No. 16 Creighton (9-1) rolls into Haas Pavilion on Saturday. Creighton’s Doug McDermott is the NCAA’s fifth-leading scorer, averaging 22.7 points per game and Cal’s Allen Crabbe is sixth, dropping 21.9 points per outing. “You always want to play the best, you just want to beat the best,” Crabbe said. Sonny Dykes confident Cal can turn things around

At the urging of athletic director Sandy Barbour, Sonny Dykes pulled out a white Cal cap from underneath the podium and popped it on his head to accent his blue-and-gold tie and dark suit, drawing cheers from department staff who filled the Memorial Stadium room. Allen Crabbe scored 24 points, Justin Cobbs added 20 and the Cal men’s basketball team pulled away in the final 6 minutes to beat Pacific 78-58 on Sunday to win the DirecTV Classic. The Golden Bears, who are off to their first 6-0 start since 2007, were 22-for-25 on free throws. Five of their victories have been by double-digit margins. Read More

Firing Tedford is the wrong move for Cal’s football program

The “what have you done for me lately” group got its way Tuesday, with the firing of Cal football coach Jeff Tedford. I think that is a big mistake. Cal has had only brief moments as a football power since the end of World War II. The consistent football powers are schools which apply only the breathing test for admission — if they can breathe, they’re in — and don’t expect them to do anything academically once they get in.
