SAN JOSE — After executing the game plan to near perfection for more than 59 minutes, the Cal men’s basketball team almost let an upset victory in the NCAA Tournament slip away. A suffocating zone defense and plenty of scoring help for Allen Crabbe propelled the 12th-seeded Bears to a 64-61 victory over No. 5 UNLV at HP Pavilion in San Jose on Thursday. BERKELEY — An upset loss to Utah cost the Cal men’s basketball team a higher seed in March Madness, but the Bears caught a break by snagging a game in their own backyard.   After back-to-back losses, Cal (20-11) landed a No. 12 seed in the East region of the NCAA Tournament. Despite the setback, the team received the good fortune of playing in front of its home crowd in a rematch against fifth-seeded UNLV (25-9) at HP Pavilion in San Jose on Thursday. Read More

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Utah has taken down two higher seeds in the Pac-12 tournament. Two more, and the Utes' postseason will continue. Only a handful of San Francisco prep baseball players are currently at the Division I level of college competition and two of them sit about a foot away from each other in the Cal locker room. Freshman Collin Monsour and redshirt sophomore Dylan Nelson, both in their first season at Cal, sit at adjoining lockers on the Berkeley campus and have become friends largely due to their common bonds. Stanford, Cal women rake in Pac-12 media awards

The Stanford and Cal women’s basketball teams both finished the regular season ranked in the top 5 in the nation, so it came as no surprise that both were rewarded with Pac-12 Conference media awards Monday. Stanford star Chiney Ogwumike was unanimously voted as the conference’s Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, the conference unveiled.
