Package suspected to be a bomb in Tenderloin deemed harmless

Authorities on Thursday deemed a suspicious package found at a Tenderloin building to be harmless, police said. Firefighters had initially responded about 6:30 a.m. to a report of smoke coming from a garbage chute in the building at 44 McAllister St., fire Lt. Mindy Talmadge said. Firefighters extinguished the blaze in the chute and discovered that a resident had left a threatening note in his room and had also deactivated smoke detectors and sprinklers, Talmadge said.
