San Francisco Board of Supervisors President David Chiu is scheduled to announce he will run for mayor on Monday morning.The District 3 supervisor will kick off his campaign for The City’s top post on the steps of City Hall at 11 a.m., according to a source in his camp.Chiu, whose district includes North Beach and Chinatown, was elected in 2008 with the blessing of progressive predecessor Aaron Peskin. Fed-up merchants pitch empty-storefronts fine

The storefront across from Dan Macchiarini’s business in North Beach has been vacant for years. In response, the owner of Macchiarini’s Creative Designs said he and other merchants in the neighborhood are banding together to change that by pushing for a fee for landlords the longer a store remains unoccupied. “They have no incentive to have a real market system,” Macchiarini said. Nightclub issues go before supes

Two of Board of Supervisors President David Chiu’s proposals concerning nightclub violence are before the Public Safety Committee on Monday. One concerns expanding the Entertainment Commission’s powers to include revoking permits of clubs where safety has been an issue. The other will review statistics from the commission and Police Department regarding violence. Most recently, a man was shot and killed July 11 outside Jelly’s dance cafe in the Mission Bay neighborhood. Read More
