SF Examiner turns page with new ownership

The San Francisco Examiner has a rich and storied history dating back to the Civil War. In 1880, George Hearst, a wealthy silver miner, obtained ownership in exchange for forgiving a gambling debt. The SF Examiner achieved national prominence under his son, William Randolph Hearst, who dubbed it “Monarch of the Dailies.” Some of America’s finest writers, including Mark Twain, Jack London, Ambrose Bierce and Herb Caen, have graced our pages.
