Black Friday sales marked the start of the holiday shopping season last week, and San Francisco police are making changes to ensure that shoppers in The City stay safe.All of The City’s police stations intend to ramp up foot patrols in their districts during the holiday season to reduce the likelihood of robberies and other crimes.There will also be additional horse-mounted and plainclothes officers, and police will bump up traffic enforcement.

There is no such thing as a perfect tree, but James Carlton works hard to make it look that way.
Carlton, tree farmer with Carlton Christmas Trees LLC, and his team of workers are behind the 80-foot-tall, 30-foot-wide tree in Union Square that — to the untrained eye — looks perfect. It gets that way, however, after weeks of preparations.
“No tree is perfect,” Carlton said. “They all have a little bit of character.”

If economy-wary Bay Area residents went on a shopping diet last holiday season, this year it seems the goal is to keep that weight off.
“[The economy] is still bad,” said Warren Hong, 79, of the Richmond district, who was eating lunch in Union Square the day after Thanksgiving and watching shoppers stream in and out of the nearby Macy’s.
