An off-duty federal agent was injured in a gunfire exchange in Newark this morning, a police spokesman said. The shooting was reported at 5:53 a.m. in the area of Mayhews Landing Road and Bettencourt Street.“The federal agent had a confrontation where gunshots were exchanged in front of his residence,” police Cmdr. Bob Douglas said. The agent was hit and is being treated at a hospital for his injuries.

A woman with a small child in her car was arrested in San Leandro early Tuesday morning on suspicion of driving under the influence and child endangerment after an officer saw her throw a tequila bottle out her car window, police said. Shortly after 2 a.m., the officer saw the woman, later identified as Lynisha Jefferson, 30, of Escalon, Calif., trying to park her Nissan Altima in the parking lot of a Quik Stop at 1001 MacArthur Blvd., police said.
