Bank mistakes driving people to credit unions

On Saturday, I was at my credit union about 45 minutes before the 3 p.m. closing time. More than 30 people were in the lobby area filling out application forms to open new accounts.  These people were told it would take nearly two hours to process all the applications of everyone waiting in line. They were also informed that everyone there would have their applications processed that day even after the doors closed. Read More

‘Durbin Fees’ are coming, thanks to Congress

If we had a “Dim Bulb of the Year” award, we would give it to Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill. How better to honor someone who so ostentatiously proposes a policy with obvious unintended consequences, then gets angry when they predictably come to pass? Read More

Small business engines are stalled

“I don’t know what to do anymore.” In the 20 years I’ve known him, Jeff has never uttered words like that about the wholesale-distributor business he built from scratch over the past 25 years. He’s had ups and downs like every small business, but he’s always seemed to know instinctively what to do, either to sustain existing business, or, in good times, expand into new areas and new brands.
