The Los Angeles Police Department interrogated artist Alex Schaefer, 41, twice after a passer-by phoned in a tip that he was outside a Chase Bank, painting a picture of it on fire. Schaefer told the officers he wasn’t a terrorist and said his painting was “a visual metaphor for the havoc banking practices caused.” Then several days later, two plainclothes detectives came to his house and asked, “Do you hate banks? WHAT: The 19-year-old man who told hostages and police he had a gun was actually unarmed during a three-hour standoff that ended with officers shooting and killing him outside a North Carolina bank. Mitchell had as many as seven hostages, though most were released during the course of the standoff Thursday. At the end, Mitchell walked out holding what appeared to be a gun to the head of a hostage and police fired, killing him.
