No one saw this coming but the A’s themselves.
On Wednesday, Oakland became the first team to come from five or more games back to win a division or a pennant with fewer than 10 games to play, topping the Rangers 12-5 to complete a three-game sweep and take the AL West crown.
The A’s never held sole possession of first place this season until they recorded the final out of game No. 162.

If the Los Angeles Angels were looking for proof positive they can make a late push for the postseason, they got it this week.Los Angeles capped a three-game sweep of the A’s — its first over the NorCal rival since October 2009 — with Wednesday’s 7-1 win in front of 15,404 spectators at the Coliseum.

OAKLAND — One day after celebrating the 10th anniversary of winning an American League-record 20 consecutive games, the A’s extended their current winning streak.Coco Crisp hit a three-run homer and had a career-high-tying five RBIs, and Jarrod Parker pitched eight shutout innings, giving up six hits, as the A’s routed the Cleveland Indians 7-0 on Sunday.

Bartolo Colon allowed one run in seven innings to win his third straight start and the host A’s swatted four home runs to snap a three-game losing streak in a 10-4 thumping of the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday.
Derek Norris hit a two-run homer and Jonny Gomes, Adam Rosales and Josh Reddick added solo shots as the A’s moved a half-game ahead of Los Angeles for second place in the AL West standings and into a tie with Baltimore for the second wild-card spot.

A club picked to finish last in the division by most experts is 14-2 in July after beating the New York Yankees in four consecutive games at the Coliseum — and winning each game by one run, including Sunday’s 5-4 win in 12 innings.
In fact, the A’s have won five one-run games in a row for the first time in franchise history, which started in 1901.

OAKLAND — A struggling A’s offense followed up Tuesday’s one-hit performance by mustering only three base knocks in an extra-inning loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday.
The Angels topped the A’s 3-1 at the Oakland Coliseum after Alberto Callaspo delivered a two-out double in the top of the 11th that brought a pair of tiebreaking runs across the plate.
