Catcher George Kottaras hit a second-deck homer to lead off the 10th inning and propel the A’s to a 3-2 victory against the Texas Rangers on Tuesday, pulling the A’s within four games of the leaders in the American League West.
Kottaras homered to right field off Mark Lowe (0-2), maintaining the A’s two-game lead over the Los Angeles Angels in the wild-card race. The Angels beat the Seattle Mariners 5-4 Tuesday.

“All I’m trying to do is win as many games as I can,” the A’s manager said Thursday after his A’s came back to drub Detroit 12-4 to break a two-game slide by winning the final game of the series.
Oakland has made a living off other teams’ mistakes this year, while Detroit has spent the season trying to overcome its defensive deficiencies.

Justin Verlander worked six scoreless innings and Miguel Cabrera drew closer to the American League Triple Crown with his 41st homer as the host Detroit Tigers defeated the A’s 6-2 on Wednesday.
Omar Infante doubled in a pair and scored during a three-run third inning and Jhonny Peralta added an RBI single for the Tigers, who pulled to within two games of the Chicago White Sox in the American League Central. The White Sox fell 3-0 to the Kansas City Royals.
