Colicky Edinburgh Zoo pandas removed from display

Two giant pandas on loan to a Scottish zoo have been removed from display while being treated for colic. Edinburgh Zoo officials say female panda Tian Tian was treated by a veterinarian for the illness on Saturday, just as her male companion Yang Guang is recovering from a bout diagnosed earlier this month. AZ animal advocates warn of fatal dog disease

Animal advocates are warning Arizona dog owners about an often fatal disease that's on the rise this year. The Arizona Humane Society has issued a health alert about distemper. Distemper is a highly contagious disease that is shed in secretions of infected animals and spread by breathing. The virus infects the lymph nodes and spreads to the blood and cell line of the respiratory, gastrointestinal and center nervous systems. Read More

Calif appeals court: Fleas are pests

A state appeals court has upheld a fine against an Oakland pet food chain, saying fleas are pests so a flea-prevention product the company sold should have been labeled a pesticide. State pesticide regulators fined Pet Food Express almost $213,000 for selling the product in 2002 and 2003 without branding them as a pesticide. Read More

Residents warned after rabid bobcat bites dogs

Authorities in Hall County are warning residents to be cautious about rabies after a rabid bobcat bit two dogs. Animal control officers say the property owner went outside with a rifle and tried to scare off the bobcat, but it refused to leave and so he shot and killed it. David Jones of the Hall County Animal Shelter says the case is somewhat unusual since most incidents of rabies in the area involve raccoons, foxes and skunks. Read More

Polo horses quarantined after equine herpes death

Horses at a Southern California desert polo club have been quarantined after one of them tested positive for equine herpes and had to be euthanized. The number of horses quarantined at Indio's Empire Polo Club hasn't been disclosed. Equine herpes can lead to respiratory illness, neurological problems, paralysis and miscarriage. State officials say two illegal animals have been found in Hawaii. The Department of Agriculture says a two-foot long snake was killed by a landscaping crew Wednesday in the Honolulu area. Snakes are illegal because officials say they pose a serious threat to Hawaii's environment. The department also says an illegal ferret was captured Sunday near a business in Hilo. Read More

Gladys Porter Zoo announces birth of gorilla

An endangered Western lowland gorilla born at a South Texas zoo has met some of the family. Officials with the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville on Tuesday allowed the infant, born Jan. 15, to join other creatures at the Gorilla Island exhibit. Zoo officials say the mother, named Martha, and baby spent their first days separate from the group to ensure a close bond. Read More

Distemper kills 7 California wild desert kit foxes

California wildlife officials say canine distemper has killed seven desert kit foxes — the first cases of the disease in the wild species. Department of Fish and Game authorities say the deaths occurred over the past two months near Blythe in eastern Riverside County.
