When Jay Cutler got hurt last November, the Chicago Bears’ promising season fell apart fast, with no capable backup behind him.

When the 49ers drafted Colin Kaepernick, they did so with the express intent to someday — someday very soon — install him as their starting quarterback.
He’d just put up collegiate numbers, with his legs and with his MLB-drafted right arm, akin to the cartoonish stats posted by none other than Cam Newton.

The best part of the 49ers’ 24-24 tie with the St. Louis Rams on Sunday was Dashon Goldson’s bewilderment at how the game ended.

The San Francisco quarterback completed 18 of 19 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns — two to Michael Crabtree and one to Randy Moss — to help San Francisco flatten the Arizona Cardinals 24-3 on Monday night.

That kind of remark might provide bulletin board material if this was some college showdown. These NFC West rivals have played each other enough to know what feelings are and aren’t involved, and that talk is usually just talk.
Besides, Cardinals safety Adrian Wilson noted, Campbell “doesn’t have a filter on his mouth.”
