Visitors to San Francisco’s Peninsula watershed could gain better access to 14,000 acres of local land under a new Golden Gate National Recreation Area proposal to complete local segments of the Bay Area Ridge Trail and connect it to the California Coastal Trail.

Andy Potts returned to familiar ground Sunday as he reclaimed a spot atop the winner’s podium at the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon.
Trimming two minutes off his time from last year’s third-place finish, Potts beat the two-hour mark and captured his fourth Escape victory in 1 hour, 59 minutes, 45 seconds.
The women’s race was won by a new face: 28-year-old New Zealander Nicky Samuels.

Two visitors to Alcatraz Island were injured when the roof of a tram they were riding in crashed on top of them. The incident occurred when the tram — which is described to be similar to a golf car — carrying four people from the ferry to the main cell tower “hit something” causing the roof to collapse forward on the passengers, according to Kagen Firth, spokeswoman with Alcatraz Cruises LLC.

Things are back to normal Monday at Alcatraz Island after a malfunctioning fire alarm caused the evacuation of more than 1,000 tourists from the island Sunday afternoon, a National Park Service spokeswoman said.Tours of the former prison started again at 9 a.m. The site is operated by the park service, spokeswoman Alexandra Picavet said.

A small fire in the cell house on Alcatraz Island shut down access for visitors Sunday afternoon.
The smell of smoke was reported around 2:30 p.m., according to San Francisco Fire Department dispatch officials. When a fire boat and crew arrived on the island a short time later they found an overheated motor in the basement of the cell house.

Be careful of the closed streets and gun shots on some Russian Hill neighborhood streets Monday afternoon.
But do not worry, it is not really police activity, instead its all part of the filming of a new TV series called “Alcatraz.”

Improvements to the energy infrastructure at Alcatraz, upgrades to trails and roads at Fort Mason, and an assessment of the Presidio’s coastal pathways will be discussed at a public open house tomorrow at Fort Mason that will cover a series of proposed projects in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
The area is part of the National Park Service, and incorporates large swathes of San Francisco, including the Presidio, Alcatraz, Ocean Beach and Fort Funston.
