Liotta: Niners' defense has stolen the show so far

AP
I’m not trying to be a wise guy, but the 49ers’ 2-0 start runs deeper than their record. And goes beyond their head coach, who deserves plenty of credit for bringing a sense of order to the franchise that has suffered through a dysfunctional decade of disappointment. Read More

Airwaves: Brown a natural on 49ers postgame show

I love former Mayor Willie Brown. Although still in the beginning stages, he is doing a good job with Gary Radnich and Eric Davis on “49ers Postgame Live” on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. Radnich, as always, is very good at everything he does. CSNBA is lucky to have him. Davis is dry and he is what he is, basically an ex-player taking up space, but Willie lights up the set. Read More

Dome opener is Favre's first home game for Vikes

Paul Sancya/AP
Games indoors were often failures for Brett Favre in the early part of his career, particularly when his Green Bay Packers came to Minnesota's deafening dome. More recently, though, Favre has played better inside than out, and that sure fits well with the Vikings. Read More

How slick was Willie’s Newsom nod?

Last week, we learned that President Bill Clinton will be endorsing San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom’s bid to be California’s next governor. Clinton is still fabulous, as evidenced by his recent appearance on “Larry King Live” in which he basically said that Kim Jong Il kidnapped American journalists so he could have an excuse to hang out with the ex-president. Spander: Reunion reminds fans of Niners’ glory days

AP
The talk was about what used to be. “Those were the days,” ex-mayor Willie Brown affirmed. The talk was about what might be again. Eddie DeBartolo had come back to his adopted home, to be inducted into the Hall of Fame which bears the name of his father, Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. He had come back to reminisce, to laugh and, even for a brief emotional moment, to cry. Read More

Dickey: Niners' running game rejuvenates team

Now do you understand why Mike Singletary made the running game the key to the 49ers’ offense? When Frank Gore was stopped cold by Arizona’s run blitzing in the opener, Singletary was criticized by media and fans, which echoed fan sentiment in my e-mail, even though the 49ers won a road game against a team that had been in the Super Bowl in February. Airwaves: Highlights and low points from the NFL

Some quotes and notes from around the NFL last week: - From Boomer Esiason, the talented analyst from the CBS “NFL Today Show” on stoic Browns coach Eric Mangini: “This guy can take the fun out of a 10-year-old’s birthday party with Big Bird.” You are correct Boomer, Mangini needs to chill and realize players are humans, not robots. Liotta: Singletary pushing all the right buttons

Getty Images
I simply can’t imagine what Mike Singletary can do for an encore this afternoon against the Seahawks. The guy who doesn’t want to be the Niners’ story this year made as good a coaching move as there was last Sunday with 1:32 left in the third quarter and his defense reeling. Burning a timeout to bring the team together for a sideline refresher course is nowhere to be found in the handbook NFL coaches play out of. Read More

49ers star Willis promoting a different type of game

Patrick Willis, 2007 NFL Rookie of the Year and two-time Pro Bowl linebacker, had an interception and 13 tackles in the 49ers’ season- opening win against the Arizona Cardinals. On Tuesday, Willis was at Ubisoft Entertainment in The City to promote one of his other passions: video games. The software company, which has an office on Third Street, and Willis teamed up to announce the release of “Assassin’s Creed II.” Read More
