Even though they went 13-3 in the regular season last year and nearly beat the New York Giants in the NFC Championship Game, the 49ers still don’t get the respect they deserve from the national media.
The whole offseason we saw stories that essentially said the 49ers’ previous season was a fluke, that they wouldn’t be able to go through a season with so few injuries, that they wouldn’t be able to sneak up on teams this season.

To most, the headline for the game Sunday is Lions vs. 49ers, a battle between two young and dynamic contenders in the NFC. It’s Jim Harbaugh vs. Jim Schwartz, two young and brash head coaches whose post-game handshake at the end of last season’s game nearly triggered a brawl.
Still to others, it’s Matthew Stafford, Calvin Johnson and the Lions’ explosive offense vs. the 49ers’ punishing and unyielding defense.

If there were any lingering doubts after last season about 49ers quarterback Alex Smith’s ability to perform consistently and win games in the spotlight, he sent a clear message with a resounding win this past weekend at Lambeau Field: 2011 wasn’t a fluke.

No one knows what to expect from Randy Moss on his return to Green Bay’s Lambeau Field. Moss has scored 15 touchdowns against the Packers, the most of any other player. He also needs 57 yards to have the most yardage against the Pack of any player.

The 49ers go into their season opener in Green Bay with a versatile offense, something wide receiver Michael Crabtree and Packers coach Mike McCarthy acknowledged during game preparations this week.
“I just feel like we’ve got our own style,” Crabtree said. “Those guys are a spread offense, that’s all they do is throw the ball. I mean, they’ve got some run game. But that’s their offense. We’re really not like that.”
