One thing you can say about former Audioslave/Rage Against The Machine firebrand Tom Morello — the guy always puts his money where his mouth is.
A devout union man for more than two decades, he was compelled this February to fly out to Madison, Wis., to perform at Capitol Square, in solidarity with workers protesting Gov. Scott Walker’s anti-union bill. He even wrote an editorial about the experience for rollingstone.com, “Frostbite And Freedom — Tom Morello On The Battle Of Madison.”
Now, under his alter ego The Nightwatchman, he’s taken his anger to the next level.
On May 17, The Nightwatchman will digitally release a full EP of union fight songs called “Union Town,” with all proceeds benefitting the America Votes Labor Union Fund, via saveworkers.org (where the title track is already available as a free download). A vinyl edition will hit on July 19, with a full album, “World Wide Rebel Songs,” to follow in summer. But right now, it’s all protest anthems, like Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land,” now featuring early expurgated lyrics.
Morello penned three new originals for the EP occasion, as well. His future is, ahem, not wobbly at all.
