Thomas Dolby in town to lecture you on science

Trending Articles

Well, the guy did repeatedly yell “Science!” at us in his old New Wave hit “She Blinded Me With Science,” way back in 1982.

So don’t be so shocked to discover that madcap experimental musician Thomas Dolby will soon be lecturing us, as well, in a studious seven-city tour that hits The City’s Bimbo’s 365 Club on Oct. 13.

We’re not kidding. He’ll be back early next year for a full theater tour, backing his upcoming “A Map Of The Floating City” disc, his first solo album in 20 long years, out Oct. 25 on Lost Toy People Records. But right now, he’ll be doing a 60-minute lecture instead, interspersed with some of the new material.

What’s the professor’s topic?

He has quite a few. How he made the album in his solar-powered converted-lifeboat studio. How stellar guests dropped by the sessions, like Mark Knopfler, Imogen Heap and Regina Spektor. And more importantly, he’ll be discussing his new social-networking transmedia game “The Floating City,” which 5,000 players have already enjoyed online, forming into nine tribes and competing for the grand prize — a free private concert with Dolby and his band.

And in case you were wondering, Dolby says, “The Floating City” is “a dieselpunk dystopia — weary survivors of a global climate catastrophe, bartering and trading to stay alive in the face of techno-piracy and mutant squid attacks.”

Well, alrighty then! Fight back with … SCIENCE! And keep up with Dolby lab doings at www.thomasdolby.com.
