Big news from San Francisco Opera: German soprano Evelyn Herlitzius will not make her debut with the company as Brünnhilde in Wagner’s”Der Ring des Nibelungen” opening next month, dropping out due to “unforeseen health reasons.”

She’s been replaced by “equally acclaimed” Swedish soprano Iréne Theorin, who has sung the role in major houses across the world. But her San Francisco Opera engagement will mark her first complete “Ring” cycle in the U.S., according to opera publicists.

San Francisco Opera General Director Matthew Shilvock said of Theorin, who first appeared here in the title role of “Turandot” in 2011, “She will be a sensational artistic partner as we take this journey down the Rhine. I am very appreciative to everyone — artists and audience alike — for their understanding as we make this change.”

The opera’s “Ring” cycles are June 12-17, June 19-24 and June 26-July 1 in the War Memorial Opera House.
