A 17-year-old girl who died after she fell off a cliff and into the Pacific Ocean on Thursday evening while walking in the area of Lands End has been identified by the Medical Examiner’s Office.

Victoria La Rocca, a Corte Madera resident, was walking with two other people when she apparently fell over a cliff at about 6:20 p.m.

San Francisco Fire Department Battalion Chief Denise Newman told reporters at the scene Thursday that the girl fell at least 50 feet into the waters below.

“They were probably walking along a path or something…and we’re not sure if she slipped,” Newman said.

National Park Service ocean rescue units used a jet ski to locate the girl in the waters, and brought her with the help of additional swimmers to China Beach, Newman said.

“She had multiple injuries and fractures, she was barely breathing when we got to her,” the battalion chief said. “She fell all the way down to the water so therefore she was in the water and was kind of cold.”

Newman said that La Rocca was likely in the chilly waters for about 10 to 15 minutes before ocean rescue units reached her.

The girl was taken to a waiting ambulance, where she was pronounced dead.

Newman said fire officials “get quite a few calls” to cliff rescues at Lands End, and emphasized that visitors should stay on the paths and avoid closed areas.
