Tech industry drives Bay Area up in rankings

Bay Area cities have climbed the rankings this year in the Milken Institute’s annual Best Performing Cities Index, a measure of a metropolitan area’s ability to add and retain jobs.

The Vallejo-Fairfield area ranked in the top 25 nationwide at 22nd, moving up from last year’s 41st place.

The San Francisco-San Mateo-Redwood City area moved up from 173rd to 97th, a significant jump in the rankings, while the San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara area jumped 78 spots to 107th.

Institute officials attributed the improved rankings in the Bay Area to growth in the technology industry.
