When you see the people in the first few rows picking sand from their hair after a particularly raucous routine of acrobats and riders, you know you are close to the action.There’s not a bad seat in the house for “Cavalia,” the “cirque du equine” under a big tent near AT&T Park that takes horse play to a new level of fun, even for non-horsey folk.

There’s about a month left to lay eyes on a 5,000-square-foot equestrian icon in Golden Gate Park before it’s put out to pasture.The Golden Gate Park horse stable’s grandstand, built in 1909 for what was supposed to be the world’s largest stadium, will be demolished within 60 days to start the crawl toward the arena’s expansion project. It comes nearly a decade after commissioners voted to close the public facility and talk overhaul.

Bay Meadows’ grandstands throbbed with the roar of 10,000 fans Sunday, the clobber of horse hooves hitting dirt and the emotion of one of the Bay Area’s fine slices of history becoming just that — history.
A few hundred yards away, in the dim barns that house hundreds of horses and many of their keepers, the emotion was also thick, if more subdued.
