South City man accused of rape in court

The trial of a South City auto body worker accused of hunting down and sexually assaulting four joggers is set to begin Monday, prosecutors said.Raul Gutierrez Contreras, 33, is charged with multiple counts in connection to four separate attacks on female joggers in South City in 2006 and 2007. In one attack, Contreras allegedly crawled under the stall of a bathroom in Orange Park in an attempt to rape a jogger, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said. Read More

Personal Best: Runner competes on home turf

One of the leading contenders to win today’s Emerald Across the Bay 12K is hometown favorite Crosby Freeman. The resident of San Francisco’s Nob Hill was third in last year’s annual Sausalito to San Francisco race, finishing behind his Asics Aggie Running Club teammates Phillip Reid and Sergio Reyes. Reid won the race with a time of 35:57, beating Reyes, the 2007 and 2008 Emerald champion, by a slim three-second margin. Freeman followed, posting a time of 36:26. Read More

The San Francisco resident who ran 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days is set to embark today on another seemingly impossible adventure: He will ride an outdoor elliptical bicycle from Chestnut Street in The City to Los Angeles, then run through L.A. for 24 hours straight to promote the new Los Angeles Marathon.
