Civic Center Plaza has been shut down to host large-scale events for extended periods during the past two months, prompting a San Francisco supervisor to complain about the Recreation and Park Department’s stewardship of the space. Since last week, the plaza between City Hall and the Main Library has been closed down for preparations leading up to the Dew Tour, a skateboarding, bicycle and freestyle motocross event that will begin today. More people sleeping amid public library shelves; other issues quieting down

Library book 37 years overdue returned in San Francisco

A Creole cookbook was returned to the San Francisco Public Library today more than 37 years overdue. The book, "American Cooking: Creole and Acadian" by Peter Feibleman, was returned by mail to the Presidio Branch Library on Friday from an address in San Rafael, said branch manager Megan Anderson. It came complete with the original checkout slip from the Presidio Branch showing a due date of Nov. 27, 1974, and a yellow post-it note. Read More

Arsonist sets pamphlets ablaze in SF library room for blind, print disabled

A man set fire to a stack of pamphlets in San Francisco’s main library branch in the unit block of Grove Street on Sunday, damaging cassette tapes, chairs and computers, police Sgt. Daryl Fong said.The fire alarm was triggered at 3:37 p.m. The fire was set in the Library for the Blind and Print Disabled room on the second floor, library spokeswoman Michelle Jeffers said, which is typically closed on Sundays. Library hosts literary speed dating for baby boomers

The San Francisco Public Library invites anyone who loves books and is seeking a soulmate to give literary speed dating a try.  The event is being offered for the second time this month. This time around, it is targeting the baby boomer generation, but it is open to all ages. The first installment was held in February and attracted more than 40 people between the ages of 22 and 40. There were events for both the LGBT and straight communities. Read More
