Location of proposed new Warriors arena would be an eye-sore

Warriors arena
In 1975, I advocated that San Francisco build an indoor arena in the area where the Moscone Center is now. The arena would have accommodated the Warriors and an NHL team. A commission appointed to study the plan voted it down by a one-vote margin. So, the Warriors stayed in Oakland. The NHL team eventually wound up in San Jose, where it has thrived as the Sharks. New San Francisco hotel planned for Moscone Center area

Moscone Center
A new, 220-room hotel could spring up in South of Market right in the middle of San Francisco’s convention hub. There currently sits an approximately 30-foot-tall building on Fourth Street between Howard and Folsom streets that houses Olivet Theological University. But under a proposal that is scheduled for approval Thursday at the Planning Commission, that low-slung building would be razed to make room for an 11-story, 220-room hotel, according to documents. San Francisco-owned garage rates offering better deals than street meters

Since The City introduced its nationally recognized SFpark system last year, parking rates at city-owned garages have fallen by 20 percent — with many lots now cheaper than nearby street meters. Rates at some garages are now as low as $1 an hour throughout the day. Parking rates at 14 of the 20 garages run by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency are determined by availability and demand. So prices drop when occupancy is low. Read More

Mayor to address solar conference despite anger about his budget

Mayor Ed Lee will deliver the opening remarks today at a major solar convention at the Moscone Center, but his appearance is surprising to some, since he cut millions of dollars from The City’s GoSolarSF program. John Rizzo, a member of the San Francisco chapter of the Sierra Club, is among a group of solar energy advocates campaigning to restore funding to the GoSolarSF program, which was launched in 2008 and has led to 1,826 solar installations, or 5.75 megawatts of energy. Apple took the wraps off its own mobile mapping service and improved the search capabilities of its Siri electronic assistant technology as it rolled out souped-up software and hardware Monday in San Francisco to help it wage war on Google. CEO Tim Cook, who took over from late co-founder Steve Jobs last August, spearheaded the unveiling of new services to help keep Google and its fast-growing Android mobile platform at bay. Read More

Moscone Center has had miraculous impact on SF

On April 11, 2000, the Giants opened their new ballpark. Even before it opened, it was heralded as “the miracle on Third Street.” But there’s another miracle on Third Street, just a few blocks north of AT&T Park, that’s celebrating its 30th anniversary this month. It’s called the Moscone Center. On Dec. 2, 1981, the Moscone Center opened to great fanfare. A few days later on Dec. 6, it welcomed its first convention group — the American Academy of Dermatologists. Read More

Moscone makeover could draw higher-profile events to San Francisco

Moscone Center
The SoMa landmark is slated for an ambitious expansion that will claim new space underground and possibly entice more high-profile — and high-spending — conventions to come to San Francisco. Over the past 30 years, the city-owned Moscone Convention Center has helped turn the once-gritty South of Market neighborhood into a red-hot destination. Almost 1 million conventioneers each year visit the sprawling center. Read More
