SAN JOSE — After executing the game plan to near perfection for more than 59 minutes, the Cal men’s basketball team almost let an upset victory in the NCAA Tournament slip away. BERKELEY — An upset loss to Utah cost the Cal men’s basketball team a higher seed in March Madness, but the Bears caught a break by snagging a game in their own backyard.   After back-to-back losses, Cal (20-11) landed a No. 12 seed in the East region of the NCAA Tournament. LAS VEGAS (AP) — Utah has taken down two higher seeds in the Pac-12 tournament. Two more, and the Utes' postseason will continue. Las Vegas is the perfect host for this week’s Pac-12 men’s basketball tournament: with a wide-open field, every team is a gamble. Cal appeared to be the favorites eight days ago, having won nine of its last 10 games. But the Bears failed to grab the tournament’s top seed, losing 83-70 to Stanford on their home floor a week ago. BERKELEY — Allen Crabbe has joined an exclusive Cal club that seems to be growing every March. The junior guard won Pac-12 Conference Player of the Year on Monday after leading the league in scoring. He is the seventh Cal player and third in the last four years to win the conference’s most prestigious award, joining Jason Kidd (1994), Shareef Abdur-Rahim (1996), Ed Gray (1997), Sean Lampley (2001), Jerome Randle (2010) and Jorge Gutierrez (2012). UC Berkeley is recognized around the world for being a progressive, forward-thinking institution, but Barbour’s inaction on this matter suggests that the athletic department is stuck in the past.
