Last year was the busiest in SFO’s history, with 44.5 million fliers passing through the hub. That marked an 8.5 percent increase from 2011, which had a then-record of 41 million passengers.

Culminating a decade of growth, passenger traffic at San Francisco International Airport reached an all-time high last fiscal year, finally eclipsing the marks set during the first dot-com boom.
Some 21.4 million passengers boarded flights at SFO during the year that ended in June, besting the previous high of 20.2 million set in 2000.
“This is a very significant moment for the airport,” SFO spokesman Michael McCarron said.

A New York City-bound flight was diverted an hour after it took off from San Francisco International Airport early this morning because of a mechanical problem, an airport duty manager said.Virgin America Flight 28 left SFO around midnight. At 1 a.m., the Airbus A319 carrying 111 passengers was diverted to an airport in Grand Junction, Colo., San Francisco airport duty manager Nancie Parker said.A mechanical issue required inspection, she said.

Nigerian stowaway Olajide Noibi flew from New York to Los Angeles via Virgin America airlines, using an expired boarding pass in someone else’s name. He somehow got past a federal security checkpoint where travelers must show their identification and boarding passes. Although Noibi aroused flight attendants’ suspicion, he successfully exited the flight and was only arrested by the FBI when he tried to pull the same trick on a later flight from Los Angeles to Atlanta.

A San Francisco animal shelter and Virgin America have teamed up to send a group of puppies to new homes on the East Coast today as part of Operation Chihuahua.A dozen Chihuahuas from a city shelter run by the Department of Animal Care and Control boarded the main cabins of two Virgin America planes and were flown to New York City this morning.

Virgin America Inc., the low-fare carrier partly owned by U.K. billionaire Richard Branson, is set to begin flights at Chicago O’Hare after an almost three-year effort to obtain gates at the second-busiest U.S. airport.Daily nonstop flights will start May 25 between O’Hare and both San Francisco International and Los Angeles International airports, the closely held airline said Thursday in a statement.
