Safety Darcel McBath signs one-year deal

The 49ers signed free-agent safety and special teams standout Darcel McBath to a one-year contract, adding depth to the secondary. McBath is the second safety added by Super Bowl runner-up San Francisco since the start of free agency. The NFC champion Niners signed Craig Dahl to a three-year contract Saturday, another move to help fill the void left when Dashon Goldson received a five-year deal from Tampa Bay last week. McBath was with the 49ers last season. Read More

NFC blows out AFC 62-35 in Pro Bowl in Hawaii

Sack-happy defensive end J.J. Watt went out for a couple of passes as a wide receiver, retiring center Jeff Saturday snapped to two Mannings on opposite teams and the NFC blew past the AFC 62-35 in a Pro Bowl that could be the league’s last. Whether the NFL’s all-star game will return or not is a question league officials will ponder the next few months. And the players gave plenty to consider on both sides of the argument Sunday. Little goes right for 49ers as Seahawks lock up playoff berth

They get one shot. That was the reminder from the man who has helped enable them to gain that shot, Jim Harbaugh. “It’s special being in the playoffs,” said Harbaugh, the 49ers rookie coach. Special because they haven’t been there for years. Special because six months ago, when the lockout ended and the Harbaugh regime started, few believed the playoffs were possible. Read More

In Mike Singletary’s first full season at the helm, the 49ers finished at 8-8, the first time the club had finished at .500 or better since 2002. Now with Kurt Warner and Anquan Boldin out of Arizona, the Seattle Seahawks undergoing a major makeover under new coach Pete Carroll and the St. Louis Rams still bumbling along, the NFC West is wide open.
