Alert issued at Martinez Shell refinery

A health advisory was issued Tuesday because of flaring at the Shell refinery in Martinez, but it was canceled an hour later. Randy Sawyer of Contra Costa Health Services said a vessel at the refinery became “overpressurized,” which activated a safety mechanism that releases pressure through flaring, which creates black smoke that contains sulfur dioxide and other combustible products. Defendants in Richmond gang rape case plead not guilty

Six defendants accused of beating and gang raping a 16-year-old girl outside of Richmond High School's homecoming dance in October 2009 pleaded not guilty Wednesday to numerous felony charges.The defendants were arraigned in a Martinez courtroom Wednesday morning, and all agreed to a tentative trial date of Sept. 4, 2012.In December, the six defendants were ordered to stand trial for the beating and gang rape, which occurred in a dark courtyard on the Richmond High campus. Man killed by Amtrak train in Martinez

A man was struck and killed by a westbound Amtrak train Sunday afternoon, according to Martinez police. The collision was reported around 1:15 p.m. Responding officers found the adult male victim dead at the scene. The cause of the accident remains under investigation, police said. Read More

3.6-magnitude earthquake strikes East Bay

A 3.6-magnitude earthquake rattled the Bay Area for the second time in as many days, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.The quake struck in the East Bay at 9:47 a.m., with its epicenter about three miles north-northeast of San Leandro and six miles east-southeast of Oakland and a depth of 5.7 miles. Bernie Martinez of Foster City was making a six-figure salary at a title company. He arrived at work one day last year to find a note on the door saying the company was shutting down.
