The new NFL labor deal will include one provision that will be better for fans, but retain another practice that is the biggest rip-off in sports.
The positive move is dropping the plan to go to an 18-game regular-season schedule. This was a terrible idea, spawned by a desire to increase already fat TV deals. Pro football already is racked by injuries, and adding two regular-season games would have increased the injury rate.

By the end of this week, we should know if an NFL lockout will remain in place.
The players won round one when U.S. District Court Judge Susan Richard Nelson ruled against the lockout, but the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 on Friday to issue a temporary stay. That court is regarded as the most business-friendly appellate court in the country, but the temporary stay was apparently granted to give the court a chance to review Nelson’s decision.

The commissioner, Roger Goodell, says the NFL Draft is one of his favorite events. “Because,” he told USA Today, “it’s all about football.” Apparently so is the honorable Susan Richard Nelson, who has decided people who play it for a living, well, ought to be able to play it for a living.
Nelson is the U.S. District judge in St. Paul, Minn., who ordered an end to the lockout declared last month by the owners against the players.

The NFL public relations machine has set up a year-long sport.
Once, the season ran from September through December, with championship games in January. The draft was in February, and then everybody took a vacation until training camp in July.
Now, there’s a seamless run. The Super Bowl is played in February. Then, the draft combine is held in Indianapolis.

Television networks and, by extension, viewers who have cable systems with NFL games, are backing the owners in the current dispute over a new collective bargaining agreement.The networks have agreed to pay owners approximately $4 billion to cover their operating costs during a lockout. In theory, the owners would repay it when play resumes, but it might only be a part of the next agreement.

The Green Bay Packers won the Super Bowl despite losing star receiver Donald Driver (high ankle sprain) and cornerback Charles Woodson (broken collarbone) in the first half.This was nothing new to the Packers, who lost 16 players, including six starters, to injured reserve during the season. Star quarterback Aaron Rodgers had two concussions during the season.
