South City police search for masked vandal who lit car on fire

South San Francisco police are hunting for a person who smashed the window of a car and lit it on fire early Tuesday morning. Witnesses say that just after midnight a person wearing a black hoodie and a mask used a brick to smash the window before throwing a lit container with flammable liquid inside, police said. The suspect then fled in a white four-door sedan. The fire in a neighborhood near U.S. Highway 101 and Sister Cities Boulevard did not injure anyone. Read More

Wife-beater can't beat rap

The judge's gavel was mightier than this tool. A man who beat his wife with a hammer in front of their son in South San Francisco three years ago – and attacked her again after bailing out of jail  – was sentenced Thursday to 36 years to life in prison. Raymon McCowan, 49, of American Canyon, was seen by employees of La Quinta Inn in South City striking his wife of 19 years in the hotel parking lot on Feb. 8, 2010. Read More

A prolific cellphone thief is apparently cashing in on the rising trend of thefts from offices. In the past two weeks, South San Francisco police reported, a crook posing as a customer has stolen from a furniture store, two dental offices and two auto dealers. Youngsters find it hard to buy cigarettes in San Mateo County

Scoring a pack of smokes apparently isn’t easy for underage kids in northern San Mateo County cities.A law enforcement operation on Saturday had underage decoys try to buy tobacco at 161 businesses in Millbrae, San Bruno, South San Francisco and Daly City.Only 14 of the merchants received citations for selling to minors, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.Among the cited were two Walgreens stores in Millbrae.
