Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Sammy Sosa are set to show up on the Hall of Fame ballot for the first time, and fans will soon find out whether drug allegations block the former stars from reaching baseball’s shrine.
The ballot will be announced today.
Craig Biggio, Mike Piazza and Curt Schilling are certain to be among the other first-time eligibles. Jack Morris, Jeff Bagwell and Tim Raines are the top holdover candidates.

Preliminary ballots for the Pro Football Hall of Fame are in the mail, and we are left to ponder whether the committee finally will enshrine the most obvious candidate on the list.
That would be Eddie DeBartolo, the former owner of the 49ers.

The school located near Fisherman’s Wharf is hosting Berean Christian (Walnut Creek) in football at 1 p.m., but that’s just the appetizer to a full day of celebration.

The NBA had just started its draft lottery in 1985, and Al Attles was the Warriors representative when the lottery order was decided and televised. Patrick Ewing was the big prize, and the nation could see Attles’ stricken look when the Warriors were slotted at No. 7.

Nine athletes covering seven decades of competition in six sports from six high schools comprise the 2011 San Francisco Prep Hall of Fame induction class.Zac Lee and Ray Calcagno, St. Ignatius quarterbacks from different generations, are two of the nine who will be honored at the May 21 ceremony. Bill Walsh rarely got it wrong. But, a decade ago when he released Jerry Rice after 16 mostly glorious seasons with the 49ers, the Genius did something Flash 80 rarely did. He dropped the ball.
