The California Department of Fish and Game this month is releasing thousands of trout into more than a dozen Bay Area lakes, to the delight of local anglers. Some of the fish weigh as much as 2 pounds, according to the department.

More than three years after the 2007 Cosco Busan oil spill fouled the waters of the San Francisco Bay and beyond, local fishermen will receive a total of $6 million in damages through a class action lawsuit.The container ship spilled roughly 58,000 gallons of heavy bunker fuel into the bay on Nov. 7, 2007, after it struck a fender around one of the Bay Bridge’s towers and cut a 212-foot gash in the ship’s hull.

Commercial salmon fisherman Duncan MacLean, based out of Half Moon Bay, said he would gladly talk about the boom times of his industry — if only he could remember them better. Due to massive shortages in stock, it has been three years since federal officials have allowed a full salmon season, and since 1978 the number of commercial fishermen in the state has fallen from 5,000 to just 341.
