A huge drop in narcotics arrests citywide does not seem to have affected the overall rate of violent crime in The City, which has some observers calling into question traditional police philosophy linking drug activity and violence.
Police statistics show a 25 percent drop in drug arrests this year over last, and a 6 percent decrease in overall violent crime. Drug arrests in 2010 were 39 percent off 2009 totals, while violent crime dropped 3 percent that year.

San Francisco Police Department Capt. Greg Corrales announced Monday that he would not run for sheriff.
Corrales said he will support Sheriff’s Capt. Paul Miyamoto in his bid to succeed Sheriff Michael Hennessey, who is retiring after three decades in office.
So far six people – including Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, who has Hennessey’s endorsement – have pulled candidate papers to compete in the November election.

A crisis involving warring gangs in the Mission district in recent weeks appears to have been averted, at least temporarily, according to police.
Violence between Norteños and Sureños was touched off by Sureño graffiti appearing on Norteño turf near 19th and Bryant streets Feb. 18, according to police. During the two weeks following, there were four shootings and two stabbings, including one fatality.
