San Mateo County gun buyback event nets hundreds of firearms

A gun buyback that took place in San Mateo County on Saturday has been deemed a success by one of its organizers, U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier. An estimated 250 firearms were collected at the buyback event, which was held at the South San Francisco courthouse, according to the office of the Peninsula Democrat. Organizers paid more than $23,000 in exchange for the unwanted firearms — $100 for every handgun and $200 for rifles and assault weapons. Read More

A bill that would help fund the restoration of San Francisco Bay was reintroduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier. The San Francisco Bay Restoration Act would authorize up to $20 million annually over five years to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for efforts to curb the effects of pollution, restore wetland habitat, protect fish and wildlife and help local communities keep the Bay clean, Speier said.
