UPDATE: Man shot by police in Bayview dies

A 19-year-old man who was shot by police Saturday afternoon in the Bayview has died. The suspect, who was shot by two officers after allegedly turning and firing at the cops, was running from police after failing to provide a valid Muni fare died. A spokeswoman for Supervisor Malia Cohen, who represents the Bayview district, said she received confirmation from San Francisco General Hospital that the suspect died. But more than a decade after the plan was put into motion, the Sheriff’s Department is the sole user of the system. Shooting by BART cop appears to be far from understandable

Attorney wants man to avoid trial, go to prison for San Francisco hammer attack

The attorney for a man accused of brutally assaulting his estranged wife with a hammer said his client should go to prison — possibly for the rest of his life — but he hopes to avoid a needless trial in an already-­overburdened court system. Steve Acosta, 59, has been in jail since April 16, 2008, after what prosecutors allege were two weeks of vicious attacks on Kimberley Celoni at her Twin Peaks home. Increase in San Francisco gang violence spurs police crackdown

In response to a spate of shootings in a gritty part of The City that includes the Tenderloin and South of Market neighborhoods, police have stepped up patrols and deployed more gang task force officers. Since late May, there have been at least five shootings — four of which police say are gang-related — along or near the Market and Sixth street corridors, with bystanders sometimes caught in the crossfire. A public art installation promoted by San Francisco rock legend Carlos Santana and designed by two local artists would have brought a message of peace to the new police headquarters in Mission Bay. They envisioned a statue of a black angel, perhaps a victim of violence. It would be fashioned from melted guns confiscated through good police work. And at the angel’s feet would be an interactive boombox playing songs of peace, including an original tune from Santana. Read More

Mayor Ed Lee seeks San Francisco sales tax hike as California's rate falls

San Francisco shoppers are in store for some wallet relief when the sales tax drops by 1 percent Friday, but the full discount might be short-lived. One percent of the state sales tax is set to expire today after Gov. Jerry Brown and other Democrats abandoned hope of persuading Republican lawmakers to allow a vote on extending the tax.  The move lowers San Francisco’s sales tax from the current 9.5 percent to 8.5 percent. Update: Five shot on Market Street in San Francisco on Pink Saturday

Five people were injured in a shooting near Seventh and Market streets on Saturday night, two of them seriously, San Francisco police are reporting. Two victims in the 6:15 p.m. shooting on the 1000 block of Market Street, only blocks from the Pink Saturday festivities at Civic Center that are part of Pride weekend, were shot in the body and are being treated for life-threatening injuries, Lt.
