Police chief given leeway in command staff hiring

San Francisco's new police chief will soon be able to hire a candidate from outside the Police Department to bolster his command staff, after legislation approved Tuesday by the Board of Supervisors. Burlingame police chief to retire

Burlingame police Chief Jack Van Etten on Monday announced his retirement effective in December after serving more than three decades with the Burlingame Police Department.
