A whale was spotted in San Francisco Bay on Thursday afternoon near Pier 39, according to U.S. Coast Guard officials.
The whale was traveling east in the San Francisco Bay when it was seen around 3:30 p.m.
Coast Guard officials said a whale sighting in San Francisco Bay is fairly common in January.
Marin County-based Marine Mammal Center spokesman Jim Oswald said this time of year marks the gray whale migration. The whales are heading down to Baja.

Nearly two dozen passengers aboard a boat near Alcatraz Island in the San Francisco Bay were rescued when the vessel started sinking Friday night, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
The 22 passengers and crew aboard the Neptune, a 45-foot boat, were safely rescued after the boat struck a shoal near the north side of Alcatraz and started taking on water, according to the USCG.

A rescue crew captured one of two sea lions that were spotted entangled in debris at Pier 39 on Tuesday, a Marine Mammal Center spokesman said.
The Marine Mammal Center, based in Sausalito, responded to the “K-Dock,” an area where sea lions congregate on floating wooden platforms, about 12:30 p.m., Marine Mammal Center spokesman Jim Oswald said. He said it appeared the animals had fishing line around their necks.

A San Jose man took part in a San Francisco Police Department sting to win back his bicycle on Friday.The 27-year-old victim told cops that his $1,200 bicycle was stolen from Pier 39 on Oct. 23, police at Park Station said. Later, he saw his bike for sale online and arranged to buy it, police said. The victim contacted police and plainclothes officers accompanied him to buy the bike back.

Marine mammal rescuers are asking for the public's help in spotting two sea lions that became entangled in ocean trash and eluded several attempts at capture.
The sea lions -- a juvenile weighing about 200 pounds, and an older animal weighing roughly 400 pounds -- were spotted on San Francisco's Pier 39 with strands of wire or plastic wrapped around their necks, Marine Mammal Center spokesman Jim Oswald said.
