As 9.1 percent unemployment plagues America this Labor Day, major unions are clashing with a Democratic administration with which they normally would march lockstep. Echoing the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, at least seven unions are begging the White House to abandon regulations and procedures that prevent jobs from being created or saved.

If a time machine whisked America’s Founding Fathers from Philadelphia on July 4, 1776 to Washington, D.C.’s Bureau of Engraving and Printing on Independence Day, 2011, what might they think? Watching high-speed presses spew giant sheets of greenbacks would dazzle the eyes of even Benjamin Franklin, a professional printer. Beyond that, though, they would be disgusted.

"The Hospital Insurance Trust Fund is projected to become exhausted in 2020.” As plain as the sun, that sentence appears on page 4 of the Congressional Budget Office’s “March 2011 Medicare Baseline,” released March 18.
Those 12 words encapsulate the gargantuan problem that undergirds today’s national yelling match over Medicare. If America does nothing, the CBO calculates that Medicare will run dry on Sept. 30, 2020.

UNESCO, the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization, designated Wednesday as World Press Freedom Day. Latin America’s increasingly heavy-handed dictators generally have shifted from messy tactics of controlling the press — such as beating journalists in the streets or jailing them. Instead, using denunciations, lawsuits and broadcast-license rejections can accomplish the same objectives without drawing blood.

Wisconsin Republican Paul Ryan, the House budget chairman, must have been one of those elementary school kids who spent recess fine-tuning his homework, while the other boys and girls climbed trees and yanked each other’s hair. Even as they scream for “workers’ rights,” the one worker right union bosses despise is that right to work. The American left has hoisted “choice” onto a pedestal taller than the Washington Monument.
Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., understands that exercising this choice is a basic human right, and neither private employment nor government work should require joining or paying dues to a union.
DeMint has introduced the National Right to Work Act.
