S.F. schools officials accused of embezzlement and fraud

Six current or former employees of the San Francisco Unified School District are facing embezzlement and fraud charges stemming from the alleged misuse of an estimated $15 million in grant funding, the district attorney announced Tuesday. Money earmarked to provide students with support services, nutritional programs and violence-prevention programs was allegedly directed into bonuses, slush funds and unwarranted pay increases. SFUSD puts out bid as part of effort to improve its school food program

The San Francisco Unified School District is often recognized as a leader in the effort to improve student nutrition. In 2003, it began phasing out sodas and unhealthy snacks. In 2007, it installed salad bars at dozens of schools. Other initiatives have improved the quality of food in vending machines and increased the number of students who eat breakfast. SFUSD selects new superintendent

Richard Carranza selected as new SFUSD superintendent
Richard Carranza will be the next superintendent of the San Francisco Unified School District, after the Board of Education voted unanimously Tuesday in favor of a $245,000, three-year contract for him. Carranza, who has been the district’s deputy superintendent for the past three years, will take over for retiring Superintendent Carlos Garcia in July. Read More
