Transient held in wild gas station invasion

A Van Ness Avenue gas station attendant was reportedly attacked Friday by a transient who has apparently refused to bug off despite a court order to stay away from the area. Just before 10 a.m., police said, 31-year-old Zachary Moreno was allegedly panhandling — like usual, according to the 29-year-old station attendant — at the Chevron near Van Ness Avenue and Pine Street. Bus rapid transit has green light to launch

A plan to run swift-moving buses down the center of Van Ness Avenue was unanimously approved by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency on Tuesday. Known as bus rapid transit, the vehicles will travel on grade-separated lanes and benefit from traffic lights timed to speed up service in both directions. Despite the recent introduction of double fines for traffic citations — a deterrent that has proven effective elsewhere — pedestrian accidents on Van Ness Avenue have skyrocketed in the past two years, increasing the calls for more traffic-calming measures there.In 2008, there were nine such incidents on Van Ness, which doubles as U.S. Highway 101 in San Francisco. Alioto-Pier targets stretch of Van Ness in legislation
