A man’s split-second decision to protect his family helped deter shotgun-toting robbers in the Sunset district Monday afternoon.
Just before 3 p.m., the 36-year-old man was reportedly washing a vehicle in his driveway in the 1600 block of 33rd Avenue when he was approached from behind by a teenager with a short-barrel shotgun and another suspect. A 17-year-old Lowell High School student was struck and killed by an alleged drunken driver late Saturday night on Sloat Boulevard, a roadway that has been earmarked for safety improvements.
A 16-year-old girl was jumped and robbed about 2 a.m. Monday on 48th Avenue in the Outer Sunset district, police said.

Assessor-Recorder Phil Ting’s election to the California Assembly has set into motion a possible series of personnel changes that could result in the appointment of a new San Francisco supervisor and affect who becomes the next board president.
