San Mateo County voters asked to increase taxes, change supervisor elections

San Mateo County voters have a number of decisions to make in November. Through various tax measures, voters will be asked to help increase revenue to maintain roads, schools and hospitals, and one initiative could change the way Board of Supervisors elections are run. Measure B would change the county Charter so board elections are by district and no longer at large. The change has appeared on past ballots, and a 2009 grand jury report recommended the switch. Update: Southbound Highway 101 now open after accident results from shooting

UPDATE: All lanes have reopened on southbound U.S. Highway 101 following a police investigation and accident just north of Holly Street, according to the California Highway Patrol. A crash involving an apparent shooting victim was reported around 3:30 p.m. near Holly Street, CHP officer James Evans said. Man suspected of groping two girls in San Bruno Target store

A man accused of grabbing the buttocks of young girls at the Target store in San Bruno last month had been wearing a T-shirt at the time that read, “Rub Me For Luck,” prosecutors said Tuesday. UPS deliveryman Glenn Albrecht, 49, faces child molestation charges in connection with two separate alleged groping incidents Aug. 26 at The Shops at Tanforan. Hells Angel pleads not guilty in San Mateo shooting

A Hells Angels biker has been indicted on charges that he opened fire on a Daly City home last year, nearly striking two children, while hunting a rival gang member. Investigators say 24-year-old Dionicio Rafael Lopez picked the wrong house July 24, 2011, when he fired two shots at it. The bullets came close to hitting two children, ages 6 and 9, who were watching television, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said. Read More

Lawyer freed after smuggled pills revealed to be sleep aid

The Pacifica lawyer who was arrested on suspicion of passing pills to an inmate at San Mateo County Jail will not be charged, prosecutors said Wednesday, after the “contraband” was found to be over-the-counter sleep medication. Erika Jordening, 43, was arrested Tuesday while meeting inmate Aaron Rauls, also 43, at the Maguire Correctional Facility in what authorities initially reported was an attorney-client visit. Robbery spree suspect holes up in home surrounded by SWAT police

A suspected serial robber who had reportedly pointed a gun at a pregnant clerk’s stomach during one of five recent stickups in Redwood City engaged in a daylong standoff with police Thursday before surrendering about 6:30 p.m. About 9 a.m., a SWAT team staked out a home on Williams Avenue in the unincorporated Redwood City town of North Fair Oaks. Superintendent convicted of school swindle

Talk about bringing your work home. Timothy Hanretty, a former Portola Valley School District superintendent, pleaded no contest Tuesday to multiple felony charges involving millions of dollars he is accused of misappropriating from two school districts. Hanretty bilked more than $100,000 from Portola Valley schools and misappropriated almost $2 million from the Woodside school district, where he also once worked, the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office said. Three suspects accused of robbing Asian sex workers
