Caltrans completes excavation of Devil’s Slide tunnels

Caltrans crews have finished excavation work on two tunnels on the San Mateo County coast that will allow motorists to bypass Devil’s Slide on state Highway 1 beginning next year.More than 314,000 cubic yards of soil, clay and rock has been removed during excavation of the two tunnels, which run beneath San Pedro Mountain just south of Pacifica, Caltrans District 4 Director Bijan Sartipi said.The tunnels are each 30 feet wide and about 4,200 feet long. The former headquarters of Tesla Motors could soon be filled with San Mateo County employees if supervisors approve a $40 million purchase of the large complex Tuesday. Supervisors will consider dipping into the county’s reserves to buy two vacant buildings totaling 208,000 square feet at 1 and 2 Circle Star Way. The approval for the large purchase is scheduled for the same day the officials will begin tackling a projected $82 million deficit in the 2011-12 fiscal year. Read More

Court appearances can be a drag. A woman accused of fleeing a San Mateo County courtroom during recess after a jury convicted her of burglary was set to return to court Thursday. Jennifer Lynn Dickerson, 37, faces charges of felony bail jumping after she took off from court Nov. 16, District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said. Dickerson wasn’t found until Jan. 5. A rapist was slapped with a 19-year state prison sentence Friday for attacking a vitamin saleswoman at his Redwood City home.Prosecutors are calling it a stiff sentence, saying they had sought only a 12-year term for Ricardo Mendez, 61, who was found guilty Nov. 16 on multiple felony counts including forcible rape, forcible oral copulation and sexual penetration. Burn-related death at care facility investigated

Bruce Smith was smoking outside the Burlingame Long-Term Care facility at 3:30 p.m. when he apparently dropped the cigarette onto his gown, which caught fire. Days later, the 67-year-old died at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco from the burns he suffered. The fatal fire is now under investigation by state and local health authorities. Belmont balks at costly bonds as it evaluates needs for sewer upgrades

Belmont is having a hard time digesting millions of dollars in proposed sewer improvements on its decades-old sewer lines. The City Council balked this week at issuing about $18.5 million in new 30-year bonds to rehabilitate pipes and make repairs, which would cause an estimated 8 percent rate increase.
