Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie remains committed to Darren McFadden despite a disappointing 2012 season and hopes a new offensive system helps the running back get his career back on track.
McKenzie spoke to beat reporters on Thursday for the first time since Nov. 30 and looked back at a disappointing first season in Oakland and ahead to the future. He said McFadden will be part of that future as he enters the final year of his contract.

The slumping Raiders got a jolt Wednesday when running backs Darren McFadden and Mike Goodson returned to practice for the first time since missing three games with sprained right ankles.
Both backs got hurt in Oakland’s 42-32 loss to Tampa Bay on Nov. 4 and were finally cleared to return to practice this week. That loss started the Raiders (3-8) on a four-game losing streak that is the team’s longest in four years.

Coming off their bye week, it’s business as usual for the Raiders heading into their matchup this weekend against the undefeated Atlanta Falcons.
Oakland is a team that seems in constant rebuilding mode and is a decade removed from its last winning season and on its third coach, Dennis Allen, in three years.
“Obviously, we didn’t start the season out like we hoped,” said the 39-year-old Allen, the league’s youngest head coach. “We’re not where we want to be right now.”

The Raiders’ goal of getting off to a running start in the 2012 season has hit a brick wall through two games.
Throughout training camp, coach Dennis Allen made no secret of his desire for the Raiders to be a run-first team, hiring Greg Knapp to install a West Coast-style offense with play-action and bootlegs that are designed to complement a zone-scheme running game.

Raiders running back Darren McFadden struggled during his first two years as he was affected by injuries. At the time, the Raiders were exclusively a zone blocking team, adding more gap and power schemes when Hue Jackson arrived as offensive coordinator in 2009.
Jackson immediately went to McFadden to inquire about the plays he liked best and zone runs weren’t necessarily at the top of the list. The Raiders return to a zone scheme this year.
