Owner Al Davis died in October, Oakland traded for Carson Palmer later that month, Reggie McKenzie was hired as general manager in January, coach Hue Jackson was fired and coach Dennis Allen hired. Oh, and the club missed the playoffs for the ninth consecutive season in there too. Got all that?

The Dennis Allen era got under way Monday night at the O.co Coliseum, but the Raiders’ new coach will have to wait at least a few more days to get his first NFL win — and to see his offense score its first points. Allen and the Raiders opened the exhibition season with a 3-0 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on “Monday Night Football,” although Oakland running back Darren McFadden played well in his brief stint.

So far, so good.
Which is really no different than any other training camp with the Raiders where running back Darren McFadden is concerned.
McFadden has been the most impressive and explosive player in Napa four years running. With limited contact, he’s managed to remain healthy in July, August and into September other than a freak injury.

Firing Tom Cable and promoting Hue Jackson to head coach was the smartest move Al Davis has made since he hired Jon Gruden, and the Raiders are reaping the benefits now.
Cable was a buffoon. At postgame media sessions after losses, he was at a complete loss to explain why the Raiders were still making mistakes, especially with penalties. He’d make promises to change the pattern, but they were meaningless because he had no real plan.

Raiders fans are positively giddy this summer, thinking they might have a team that ends its NFL record string of consecutive seasons with double digit losses.
Why? Because they should have a decent offense.
It all starts with the quarterback, and the Raiders seem to have gotten a steal in Jason Campbell, yielding only a fourth-round pick in the 2012 draft for a quarterback who was originally a first-round pick by the Washington Redskins.

This is the time of the year when bad NFL teams turn the standings upside down to see where they are in the race for the No. 1 draft pick. The Raiders won’t even win that one because this is a vintage year for really bad NFL teams.
Detroit, St. Louis, Cleveland and Kansas City — the Raiders’ Sunday opponent at the Coliseum — all appear to be worse teams. Tennessee seemed to be for a time, but the Titans have righted themselves.
