Police shot and killed a fellow officer when he fired his gun as they tried to take him into custody on suspicion of sexual misconduct with a teenage girl, authorities said.
The officer was on duty at a DUI checkpoint early Saturday when the shooting occurred, Santa Maria police Chief Danny Macagni said Saturday.

Oakland police say two people were found slain and another fatally shot in what appears to be separate incidents within minutes of each other on Friday night.
The bodies of the man and woman were discovered in a car parked outside a home near Lake Merritt around 9:34 p.m. Police had gone to the home to check on the well-being of a couple after co-workers reported not hearing from them.

Police say gunmen from a radical Islamist sect have attacked another police station, killing one officer in a north Nigeria city where they killed 185 people last week.
Kano state police spokesman Magaji Musa Majiya said the shooting happened Friday in the capital Kano, a city of more than 9 million people already under siege by the sect known as Boko Haram. He said officers killed three sect members in the attack, but others dragged the bodies away.

A suspected Naga rebel opened fire at a police station packed with voters on a tense election day Saturday in northeast India, killing four people before he was shot dead, police said.
The gunman lined up with other voters outside but pulled out a revolver once he entered the building and began shooting indiscriminately, said Priyo Kumar Singh, police superintendent for Chandel district in the state of Manipur.

Police have arrested a suspected gang member after a shooting inside a Central Valley shopping mall that sent two men to the hospital.
Visalia police Sgt. Damon Maurice says 18-year-old Anthony Hansen was taken into custody by members of a SWAT team at his home around 2 a.m. Saturday.
Hansen was being held on suspicion of attempted homicide in the shooting at the Visalia Mall Friday night of 20-year-Miguel Alcala and 21-year-old Steven Haynes.

Los Angeles police say a woman has died from her wounds following a shooting at a restaurant in Hollywood that also left a male companion wounded.
LAPD Officer Norma Eisenman tells City News Service that the shooting at the Pink Pepper restaurant was reported at about 10:15 p.m. Friday.
She says three gunshots reportedly were fired, shattering patio glass.
